Normally, the Chameleon sampler will only run at speeds up to 19200 bps. While this speed is fine for 14.4 kbps and slower modems, 28.8 kbps modem users will suffer a performance hit running at this speed. Here's how to speed the connection up:
Exit the Custom dialer.
Use a text editor such as Window's notepad or DOS's edit to open the file C:\NETMANAG\TCPIP.CFG (you should make a backup copy of the file first).
Scroll down through the file until you find the section header for the interface you've created for Internet Nebraska. This will often be called [PPP0], [InetNebr], etc.
Find the line within this interface that starts with 19=, this is the line you need to change to increase the connection speed. Here's a list of the valid values speeds and their values.
Speed Code ----------- -------- 19200 bps: 19=Sv-o 38400 bps: 19=Tv>v 57600 bps: 19=Uv)k 115200 bps: 19=VvkLNote that the v in these examples is a control character, a ^L. I'd suggest not deleting that character, but rather working around it.
You should be aware that some systems may have trouble running at higher speeds. If you make a change and start experiencing errors with dropped lines or hung connections, the increased speed may be causing you trouble, back the speed down until you no longer have problems.
Also when running at higher speeds, your computer should have a 16550A UART, and (if running Windows 3.1) an improved communications driver. The driver that comes with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 is okay, you do not need to replace it. A good shareware communications driver for Win 3.1 is Cybercomm.

Some versions of Netscape for Windows 3.1 have a mis-feature that causes
this error message occasionally. Here's how to fix it:
Use a text editor such as Notepad or DOS's edit to edit the file NETSCAPE.INI
in the Netscape directory. Go toward the end of the file and find the
[Network] section. Find the line that says:
Use async DNS=yes
Change it to:
Use async DNS=no
Save the file and hopefully your DNS error messages have been solved.

Some US Robotics Sportster 28.8 modems have an older, buggy ROM chip
that needs to be replaced. The update can be ordered from the USR
Tech Support BBS.
To find out if you need this upgrade, use Windows terminal, with the
modem installed, type ATI7. The response will came back and give
you a Supervisor date and RSP date about in the middle of the
response. If the Supervisor date is prior to 4/19/95... you most
certainly need the upgrade.
USR BBS can be reached at 847-792-5092. Register as a new user. Once
completed, you will be provided with a menu page that will show
SPECIAL COMMANDS. You will want to enter SPV34 on the command line
to get the upgrade sent to you. Be sure you have the serial number
of your modem available since you will be asked for it. Follow the
instructions and the upgrade will be sent to you in about (2) weeks
or less. The upgrade comes with instructions for installation.
You can also reach USR by voice line at 847-982-5151
This upgrade fixes some know problems with V.34 compatibility.
Several Internet Nebraska users have gone through the upgrade process
and been pleased with the results.

Two inexpensive Zoom modems are based on the Rockwell RPI chipset. These
modems are the 14.4PC and 14.4EX (models 110 and 165, respectively.) To
keep costs down, Zoom and Rockwell have implemented the data-compression
and error-correction through software for these modems. While this is
a good idea in theory, it tends to not work very well, and is often somewhat
incompatible with the various software used to connect to the Internet.
To get it to work at all, you'll need to use this init string in your
software:
AT&F&C1&D2&K3+H11
The +H11 is the important part, as it turns on the software-based
data-compression and error-correction.
Sometimes there is nothing that can get the modem to work correctly, and
the modem will have to be exchanged for a modem with hardware based
data-compression and error-correction.
